Chandragiri Fort
Chandragiri Fort, a historical gem in the Kasaragod district, is located southeast of Kasaragod town. This fort holds a strategic position near the Chandragiri River, which historically marked the boundary between the kingdoms of Kolathunadu and Tulunadu. The fort’s origins trace back to the era of the Keladi Nayakas, who took control of the region following the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire. Built in the 17th century by Shivappa Nayak, Chandragiri Fort is one of the many fortifications he constructed to secure his empire.
Perched on a small hill, the fort overlooks the estuary where the Payaswini River meets the Arabian Sea, offering stunning views of the confluence. The ancient laterite walls of the fort still bear the marks of cannonball attacks, a testament to its turbulent past. Nearby, visitors can find the historic Kizhur Sastha Temple and a mosque, adding to the cultural richness of the area.
Maintained by the Archaeology Department of India, Chandragiri Fort is not only a site of historical significance but also a hub for various recreational activities. Boat services from the fort take visitors to nearby islands and palm groves, while speedboat rides, houseboat cruises, island camping, and wildlife tours in the hinterlands offer exciting adventures for tourists.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or an adventure seeker, Chandragiri Fort provides a unique glimpse into the past and an array of activities to enjoy.
