Ambalavayal

Responsible Tourism (RT) began its journey in Ambalavayal, Wayanad in 2012, attracting tourists from around the world eager to experience the authentic Village Life Package of Nellarachal. Today, Ambalavayal is blossoming into a prominent RT destination, with ongoing programs and training initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable tourism and community development.

The RT Mission has been instrumental in this transformation. Numerous micro-unit meetings have facilitated the formation of several productive units, collectively achieving sales worth approximately Rs. 50 lakh annually. These units not only contribute to the local economy but also empower the community, especially women.

In April 2018, the RT Mission conducted a training program for around 50 women in the art of making paper and cloth bags. This initiative led to the creation of thirteen new production units, which have since commenced operations, providing a steady source of income and promoting eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags.

Furthering their commitment to sustainable practices, the RT Mission launched a training program in May 2018 focused on soap making. Forty-eight women were trained to produce high-quality soaps using pure coconut oil, specifically for use in resorts and hotels. Importantly, these soaps are crafted without plastic covers, aligning with eco-friendly principles and reducing plastic waste.

Through these initiatives, Ambalavayal is not just a destination but a model of how responsible tourism can drive socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. Visitors to Ambalavayal can witness and support these community-driven efforts, enjoying a unique and enriching travel experience that contributes positively to the local way of life.
