Andaloor kavu
Sree Andaloor Kavu is a well-known temple located in Andalur, Dharmadam village of Kannur district, North Kerala. The deity worshiped here is Lord Rama, along with Lakshmana and Hanuman. The name Andaloor Kavu (“Andar-villoor-kavu”) refers to the sacred grove where the divine weapons of the deities are kept. According to myth, the temple owes its origin to Sree Parasuraman, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The temple is divided into two sections known as Mele Kavu (upper temple) and Thazhe Kavu (lower temple) locally. Thazhe Kavu is a sacred grove that hosts several rare species of Myristica swamps, mainly the Syzygium travancoricum, an endangered endemic plant.
The main festival celebrated here is in mid-February during the first week of the month “Kumbam” of the Malayalam calendar, known for its portrayal and performance of the Yuddhakanda of Ramayana. The Daivathaar Theyyam is celebrated as the annual festival of the temple, portraying Lord Rama through this traditional art form. People from all walks of life gather to observe the shared sacred customs and traditions, celebrating their fortune to be part of the glorious tale of Lord Rama. The seven-day festival begins towards the second week of February, during which more than 10 Theyyams are performed. The temple is renowned for its divinity in and around the region.
