Chain Tree Wayanad

The Chain Tree Wayanad is located near the Lakkidi viewpoint, beside NH-212. It’s a large Ficus tree surrounded by a long chain, and it has an intriguing backstory. During the British Colonial rule, there was a secret route from Lakkidi to Adivaram that was known only to the local Adivasis of Wayanad. An English engineer, along with a local chieftain named Karinthandan, discovered this route through the Ghats. However, in order to take credit for the discovery, the engineer betrayed and killed Karinthandan.

After Karinthandan’s death, travelers passing through the new route claimed to be haunted by his soul. In response, a priest is said to have called forth the spirit and bound it to a chain, which was then hung on a small tree nearby. Over time, it is believed that the chain grew along with the tree.

This unique place has become a point of interest for students and historians over time. It’s not just a simple tree; it holds a significant historical and cultural significance in the region. To honor the memory of Karinthandan, who is considered the first martyr of Wayanad, an NGO named PEEP (People’s Action For Educational And Economic Development Of Tribal People) the Karinthandan Smrithi Yatra held annually on the second Sunday of March.

During this event, people come together to remember Karinthandan and pay their respects. It’s a time for reflection and appreciation of the sacrifices made by the local hero. The Chain Tree Wayanad serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the past, and it continues to attract visitors who are drawn to its fascinating history and the natural beauty of its surroundings.
