Jain Temple
The Bathery Jain Temple in Kerala is an old and important Jain temple. It was built long ago, in the 13th century. People also call it the Digambara Jain Temple and Kidanganad Basti.
The temple’s design is very special. It was built in the style of the Vijayanagara dynasty, with lots of detailed carvings on the walls and pillars. Some carvings show scenes from Jain stories, while others have symbols from Jainism. One carving shows a snake curled up.
The temple used to have a statue of Mahavir, a Jain god. But now, it’s kept in another temple in Kalpetta. Once a year, during Mahavir Jayanthi, they bring the statue back to the Bathery Jain Temple for a big festival.
The temple has an interesting history. It started as a place of worship, then became a trading center. People from all over came here to trade. Later, when Tipu Sultan was in power, it was used to store weapons. Some say that’s why the town is called Sulthan Bathery.
Even though the temple has changed a lot over time, it’s still important. Every year, people celebrate Mahavir Jayanthi there. It’s a fun time with lots of music, food, and celebrations. The temple reminds us of Kerala’s rich history and culture, and it’s a special place for the people who live there.
