Mallam Temple

Located in Muliyar Village near Bovikanam, Kasargod District, Kerala, the Mallam temple or Mallam Durga Parameshwari Temple is very old. The main deity is Goddess Durga Parameshwari. Built by Karade Brahmins from Maharashtra, the temple is well maintained.

Key Features

A special feature of the temple is the daily Annadanam, where food is given to devotees. On Tuesdays and Fridays, many devotees come to pray for prosperity and happiness.

Annual Festival and Crowds

An annual festival happens in February or March and lasts for seven days. This event attracts many pilgrims, especially women. The temple is a top tourist spot in Kasargod and Kerala.

History and Legends

According to Kerala legends, Goddess Durga killed the demon Daruka. In other parts of India, she killed Mahishasura. She also defeated demons Chanda and Munda. Armed with Shiva’s trident, Kumaara’s spear, Indra’s thunderbolt, and Vishnu’s discus and mace, she is a symbol of Shakti. Chanda and Munda wanted to marry her because of her beauty. Angered, she killed them, bringing relief to mankind.
