Malik Deenar Juma Masjid
The Malik Deenar Juma Masjid, a striking example of Kerala’s architectural style, stands as a testament to the rich cultural and religious history of Kasargod. Believed to have been founded by Malik Ibn Deenar, a revered Tabi‘in, this mosque is one of the best-preserved and most attractive in the district. Situated in Thalankara, the mosque’s significance is deeply rooted in its historic foundations and the legacy of its founder.
In 624 AD, Malik Ibn Deenar, along with twelve of his trade associates, arrived in Kerala. Their mission extended beyond trade; they aimed to propagate Islam. This delegation included prominent figures such as Sharaf Ibn Malik, his brother Malik Ibn Deenar, and his nephew Malik Ibn Habeeb Ibn Malik. Their journey brought them to Kanhirakode, now known as Kasaragod. The group’s distinct trade practices, characterized by honesty and integrity, caught the attention of the local ruler, Cheraman Perumal. Intrigued by their conduct, the king learned about their recent conversion to Islam and the principles guiding their actions.
Fascinated by the doctrines of this new faith, Cheraman Perumal embraced Islam, marking a significant event in the region’s history. On 13th Rajab, 22 Hijra (A.D. 642), the delegation established the Malik Deenar Juma Masjid. Malik Ibn Muhammad, the son of Malik Ibn Deenar, was appointed as the mosque’s first Qazi, ensuring the spiritual guidance of the local Muslim community.
The mosque underwent reconstruction in A.D. 1809 (1223 Hijra) with the generous support of the local population, preserving its historical and architectural essence. It also houses the grave of Malik Ibn Muhammad, a descendant of Malik Ibn Deenar, making it a sacred site for Muslims. Each year, a significant local celebration commemorates the arrival of Malik Ibn Deenar, drawing visitors and worshippers who honor his legacy.
Visiting the Malik Deenar Juma Masjid offers a unique glimpse into the early spread of Islam in India and the cultural fusion that characterizes Kasargod. The mosque not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the region’s rich heritage and the enduring legacy of its founders.
