Mallam Temple

Located in Muliyar Village near Bovikanam, Kasargod District, Kerala, the Mallam temple or Mallam Durga Parameshwari Temple is very old. The main deity is Goddess Durga Parameshwari. The Karade Brahmins from Maharashtra built the temple, and they have maintained it well.

A special feature of the temple is the daily Annadanam, where food is given to devotees. On Tuesdays and Fridays, many devotees come to pray for prosperity and happiness.

An annual festival happens in February or March and lasts for seven days. This event attracts many pilgrims, especially women. The temple is a top tourist spot in Kasargod and Kerala.

History and Legends

The history of the Mallam Temple is rooted in a well-known legend from Kerala. According to this tale, Goddess Durga Parameshwari defeated the demon Daruka, a victory that is widely recognized in the region. In other parts of India, however, the Goddess is said to have vanquished Mahisasura instead. She is worshipped as the incarnation of Shakti, the divine power responsible for maintaining life on earth.

The Goddess is depicted as being armed with powerful weapons given to her by various gods: Shiva’s trident, Kumara’s spear, Indra’s thunderbolt, and Vishnu’s discus and mace. These symbols highlight her strength and ability to protect the world from evil. In the legend, two demons, Chanda and Munda, became infatuated with the Goddess and sought to marry her. However, when the Goddess became enraged by their advances, she swiftly defeated and destroyed them. This act of triumph brought relief to humanity, who had been tormented by the demons’ misdeeds. As a result, the Mallam Durga Parameshwari Temple has become a place of reverence, where devotees honor the Goddess’s power and protection.
