Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected area in Kerala, India. It covers around 344 square kilometers (133 square miles) and is situated in the scenic Wayanad district. The sanctuary forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, offering a diverse habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna.

The sanctuary boasts a mix of deciduous, evergreen, and semi-evergreen forests, along with grasslands and moist habitats. Its remarkable biodiversity attracts nature enthusiasts from around the world. Wildlife species found here include elephants, tigers, leopards, gaurs (Indian bison), sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boars, langurs, macaques, various bird species, and reptiles. The endangered Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat species, is also present within the sanctuary.

It is approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Sultan Bathery, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Calicut International Airport, and approximately 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Kozhikode Railway Station. Private taxis, buses, and other modes of transport are readily available from these hubs to reach the sanctuary.
