Trekking to Chembra Peak: A Journey Through Wayanad’s Misty Hills

There’s something special about starting a trek before sunrise. The roads are quiet, the air is cool, and every turn brings the promise of a new adventure. During my trip to Wayanad, trekking to Chembra Peak had been at the top of my bucket list—and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my journey through Kerala.

I reached the trekking base near Meppadi early in the morning. After completing the entry formalities and receiving instructions from the forest officials, our small group began the climb. The weather couldn’t have been better. A light mist floated over the hills, and the fresh mountain air instantly made the early wake-up worthwhile.

The trail started gently through rolling tea plantations, where neatly trimmed bushes stretched across the hills like a green carpet. Local workers were already busy plucking fresh tea leaves, and the peaceful surroundings made it tempting to stop every few minutes for photographs.

As the climb became steeper, the scenery changed dramatically. The tea gardens gave way to lush grasslands, rocky paths, and dense patches of forest. Birds chirped from the trees, butterflies fluttered across the trail, and cool mountain breezes offered welcome relief after every challenging stretch.

About halfway through the trek, I finally caught sight of the famous heart-shaped lake, locally known as Hridaya Saras. Nestled among the hills, the naturally formed lake looked exactly like its name suggested. Surrounded by mist and greenery, it was one of those places that photographs simply can’t capture completely. Everyone paused to admire the view, take pictures, and enjoy a well-earned break.

Sitting beside the lake for a few minutes, listening to the gentle breeze and watching clouds drift across the mountains, was easily my favorite part of the trek. It was peaceful, refreshing, and a reminder of why Wayanad is one of Kerala’s most loved hill destinations.

The journey continued uphill, becoming more challenging with every step. Although visitors are often allowed to trek only up to the heart-shaped lake depending on forest regulations and weather conditions, the higher viewpoints offered breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, rolling hills, and endless stretches of greenery.

By late morning, the mist began to clear, revealing panoramic views of Wayanad’s landscape. Looking across the mountains, I could see winding roads, tea estates, and distant forests disappearing into the horizon. The effort of climbing suddenly felt insignificant compared to the beauty unfolding before me.

After descending, I stopped at a nearby local restaurant for a traditional Kerala lunch. Fresh appam, vegetable stew, spicy chicken curry, and a hot cup of Wayanad tea were the perfect way to end an adventurous morning.

What made Chembra Peak unforgettable wasn’t just the famous heart-shaped lake—it was the entire journey. The changing landscapes, cool mountain air, friendly fellow trekkers, and peaceful silence of the hills created an experience that stayed with me long after I returned home.

If you’re visiting Wayanad and enjoy nature, photography, or outdoor adventures, Chembra Peak is an experience you shouldn’t miss. It’s not just a trek—it’s a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.
